No. 10 The Avett Brothers – I and Love and You
When, in 2008, The Avett Brothers signed to Columbia’s American Recordings from their independent home of Ramseur, many fans feared that the brutal world of major labels would be too much for the South Carolina brothers Scott and Seth. After listening to their first album for American Recordings, fans will have felt that they shouldn’t have worried.
From the pining title track to the bass drum blitz of Kick Drum Heart, I and Love and You is an album of impressive scope. It shines brightest in its most tender moments, when the brothers’ heartfelt vocals are clearest in the mix. Never is this more apparent in the yearning beauty of Laundry Room.
All in all, I and Love and You is a beautiful, beautiful piece of work, simultaneously keeping hold of what made The Avett Brothers special in the first place, as well as pushing their song writing forward into new territory.
