Ones to Watch in 2011 – The Vaccines
Music — By Andrew Evans on 07/01/11Already being dubbed the British Strokes by many, The Vaccines are four scruffy boys with guitars, and they don’t mess around. Their opening single Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra) stands at just 85 seconds in length.
Lead singer Justin Young reached minor notoriety as part of London’s Nu-folk scene, going under the guise of Jay Jay Pistolet, however with that now defunct, The Vaccines should give him the attention he so desires.
There are aspects of The Strokes to what they do, as there are hints of Arcade Fire and The Jesus Mary Chain, and having signed to Columbia you will surely be hearing a lot more from them in 2011.
They say: “We wanted to be as direct as possible because no one’s really doing that. All the good guitar bands are sonically interesting, but it’s very ‘clever’ – put on your headphones and you’ll hear something new on the 10th listen. I like music in that vein but we’re the antithesis of that. It’s straight-up rock’n'roll that people will either get or not within the first few seconds.” – Justin Young
We say: Good to see people getting excited by a British guitar band again. Whether or not they can live up to the hype will be another thing. Next year’s The Drums anyone?
