Last night’s Opening Ceremony proved many things, but perhaps more emphatically than anything, it showed that we know our way around a melody.

Bowie, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Blur, Winehouse, and…er, Fuck Buttons. First and last time we’ll hear Fuck Buttons at an Opening Ceremony? Most probably.

While Macca led the crowd through a sing-song of ‘Hey Jude’ the real thrill of the live performances was watching Arctic Monkeys tear through their breakthrough track ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’ infront of a billion people.

They then ebbed into a rather more sedate take on The Beatles’ ‘Come Together’, which was absolutely ruddy lovely.
