Laura Marling’s last outing, 2011’s A Creature I Don’t Know, saw her wrestling with a beefier sound and a more sexualised lyric book. It was, in our own words, a record that “makes the listener whole-heartedly aware that, surely, it’s just a matter of time until she writes a classic record.”
Well, now comes its follow-up. Once I Was An Eagle will be released on 28th May and was recorded in Ethan Johns’ studio over the course of 10 days, with the man himself on production duties. It also sees Marling working without her band.
“It’s just me and [producer Ethan Johns] this time. I gave him the songs and he pretty much ran with it. I’m very lucky to have him.”
