At this moment in time it’s probably easier to name a female artist that isn’t working with Dev Hynes.
Whether it’s the likes of Solange, Sky Ferreira or Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan, the Blood Orange/Lightspeed Champion/Test Icicles man has undeniably carved a new niche in the pop world, reinterpreting classic R&B traits into a modern context.
The latest alumni of the unofficial ‘Hynes academy of cool’ is Laura Welsh, who broke onto the scene earlier this year with the frankly brilliant ‘Unravelled’, a subdued and intricate pop hit that found beauty in its simplicity, bearing a striking resemblance to Sade, or more recently Jessie Ware with its subtle electronic foundations and powerhouse vocals.
Welsh’s follow up single, ‘Cold Front’ has seen similar success in the last two weeks, gaining over 60,000 SoundCloud plays so far, with more sure to come after the accompanying video was uploaded earlier today.
The meticulously choreographed clip for ‘Cold Front’ perfectly encapsulates the raw emotion of the single, as slick visuals accompany the smooth electronic instrumentation, whilst Welsh’s impassioned vocals melt over increasingly gritty (shadow based) scenes.
‘Cold Front’ is out July 15th through Polydor/Outsider, check out the video below:
