I know what you’re thinking. Katy Perry and Lady Gaga? Within 24 hours of one another? Well, yes. Dummy. While I can’t say that Teenage Dream is the record I reach for when I’ve had one of those days and only ice cream and lolz with my palz will do, it is important every now and then to dip our toes into the murky waters of pop. And these two releases, if nothing else, certainly feel like moments.
Yes, from Perry’s golden trucks to Gaga’s gargantuan iTunes show (rumoured to be costing her $760,000) there is something rather captivatingly old school (read tacky) about the releases of Prism and ARTPOP and the way the two will surely be put against one another in a rather tragic way. Only one will win. For some reason.
The truth is, neither gets anywhere near ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ territory – that sacred place where only the bestest pop songs are allowed to go – but this from Gaga is definitely the most dissapointing of the two. Unimaginative, and possessing a sound that is no longer unique in any way, ‘Applause’ has the air of a bad Lady Gaga tribute act performing one of her lukewarm numbers.
