Back in April the internet understandably went into meltdown when R Kelly joined French alternative legends Phoenix on stage during their Coachella headline slot, performing his seminal hit ‘Ignition (Remix)’ over the equally huge ‘1901’ for a live mashup that’s still going round our heads four months later.
Since that fateful day in Indio, California, it was thought that both artists were yet to collaborate again, until earlier this week when it was announced that a new remix of Phoenix’s recent single ‘Trying To Be Cool’ featuring the soul legend would be released in the near future. After a video teaser from the band premiered earlier today, a full version of the track is now available to hear online.
Featuring an expectedly smooth verse from Mr Bump n’ Grind himself, Kelly sings about hollering at the honeys, taking shots, and of course throwing money in the club (as you do) in the slickest way possible over the mostly unchanged foundations of Phoenix’s dreamy single.
This shouldn’t work, but it does (brilliantly in fact). We want more unexpected collaborations please.
Phoenix’s ‘Bankrupt’ is out now on Atlantic Records, check out the R Kelly remix of ‘Trying To Be Cool’ below.
