When it comes to running is listening music important or are you a person who chooses to let yourself submerge in your own mind and thoughts? It would look that running with music divides idea; you either love it or you don’t. In fact, sports psychologists distinguish among runners who are ‘associators’ – people who choose to concentrate inside during a run while wearing your best running shorts, and ‘dissociators’ – people who favor intrusions so as to forget what they’re setting themselves through. That said, whether you’re a person who loves music, what are the advantages and disadvantages of listening to music while running?
Advantages of jogging and running with music:
Study has shown that there is a highly complicated communication between your mind and your body in regards to music and sporting achievement. Of course, music cannot immediately impact your performance, but it’s within impacting your subconscious state that music can improve physical performance. There are a lot of ways that music can do this:
- Boost your spirit: Physical effort can usually have a negative impact on how you feel, (if it hurts you get irritable!) so listening to music will make you happy and cheer you up.
- Dissociation: During low to medium-intensity workouts, music can divert you from feelings of stress and burnout.
- Arousal: Music can change your nervous and physiological arousal. This is why a lot of players make use of music as part of their pre-performance system to ‘uplift’ themselves.
- Rhythm answer: There is substantial proof to recommend that the synchronization of action with music results to better endurance and movement competence.
With that in mind, which music is perfect and how do you choose a playlist? Professor Andy Lane, a Sports Psychologist at the University of Wolverhampton suggests there are five elements that is crucial when choosing the best playlist: speed, style, lyrics, any thoughts that the music may trigger and the collection of the songs. Commonly songs that are upbeat with exciting lyrics that result to positive emotions are best.
